UGH that has taken WAY too long Jane! Hahaha. You’ve got me in suspense for sure. What will it be? It’s got center stage I see. I do believe you’ve left me a hint though! So I think I know the maker (maybe) haha. Well I’ll be gone most of today but you can bet later today I’m checking back. LOTS OF PICTURES please. Excited for you.

It arrived while I was teaching😀 and I had to play it for about a 1/2 hour once tuned. Fingers kind of sore from bigger strings.
……. It’s a Folkroots BASS 🎉🎉 Eastern red cedar top, walnut back. I love it 😍

Now that is a beauty Jane. Look into Elaine Conger (her stuff is on Folkcraft site) – pretty sure she plays bass and has material for it!
So like the baritone is 4 steps below the standard DAD – a BASS is a full OCTAVE below standard DAD. Haven’t touched one of those yet. So cool.
I too like wood with character. I’m no wood expert but I believe those may be sap lines (the lighter wood) at least that’s what I was told about that one dulcimer I made in a class – I picked the fretboard specifically because of the beautiful sap line. Again no pro with wood but it’s definitely a beauty in my eyes. Neat sound holes too.
I bet that cedar smells nice! Thanks so much for sharing that with us. I look forward to hearing it for sure!
*little side note – if you let Folkcraft know that you’d like to get a standard nut and bridge for it I’m positive they will hook you up. That way you can explore how it sounds as a standard as well (if you so desire that is). I just enjoy experimenting and such with mine. My all cherry (baritone) sounds totally different (in a great way) when I put the standard setup on it and swap for the lighter strings. Man I bet that thick bass string is huge! Haha.

So Jane, since it’s a full octave down you use your same chords. Probably not much strumming but more picking and maybe playing 2 strings at once. I bet it smells fantastic too! Haha

I know my mind and heart haven’t been in a good place most the month, and yesterday I REALLY REALLY was going to do something and my IPad seized up.
