Forward Roll – Scruggs banjo Lesson 1

It was bound to happen! I’m playing Scruggs style banjo again. Standard G tuning here. gDGBD.

ALL banjo is good banjo in my opinion. Haha. Here is a little intro lesson for you.

NOTE – you are not required to use fingerpicks but it is recommended for this style of play.

We will use our THUMB (T) INDEX (I) and MIDDLE (M) fingers to play this style.

You want to first ROOT your picking hand down onto your head with an anchor using your ring finger, pinkie, or both down near the bridge. Your thumb will ALWAYS pick down on the strings, your index and middle will ALWAYS pick up on the strings.

The Forward Roll – like all rolls there are many variations, but this is a basic forward roll.

We will be picking on the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st strings. With our T,I,M fingers.

Begin picking with your thumb on the 3rd string, index on 2nd string, and middle picking the first string. Sound each note out. Try to get each note at the same volume (we don’t want 1 loud note followed by 2 soft notes), aim for clear crisp notes.

Practice this a million times. Lol.
